Please read the following article:
http://www.nytimes.com/2011/03/15/opinion/15engel.html?_r=1

2) After you've read the article, please Respond/ React/ Reflect like we've been doing in class with the poems and You Tube clips. You will need a gmail account to post on this blog.  I asked you to create an account  in class today, however,  several of you said that you already had gmail accounts.  That is great! Good luck!

  1. I feel what we are doing with poetry in class recently is a big thing. In middle school we did little to know poetry and kids never could learn how to mold the skills into something they could enjoy and express there feelings with. Being able to learn about poetry is a big step for me, i learned that poetry can come in so many different forms. It can be produced through forms of music, art, theater and emotions. Poetry has already changed how i think about everything in my life and how i see things differently in a way poetry opened my eyes and a new door and option to relive stress in my life.

I feel that it is sad that “as many as a quarter of American students are not finishing high school." The current educational approach should prepare teenagers for their adult life, other than just to graduate or for college academics. Being in school its always having to be quiet while learning. But, if we are not communicating during the day other than in the hallways or at lunch, how are we supposed to gain social skills? Even when we are in the hallways, and at lunch we (teens) don't use proper language. So being in class and having to use proper language will allow us teens to develop a useful, and appropriate conversation.

  3. I found the article very creative , hard working and interesting. I'm glad the students came to their senses to graduate high school and that it's time to think about their future. I think every student should graduate and have a good life. Reading this article could change other's minds and help them work harder to graduate and change their lives. ~ Amir Smajlovic

  4. I think that it is good to let students make some of their own decisions in there school depending on what the decisions are. As for the poetry unit I think this is a good chance for me to expand my knowledge and going deep into poetry. It gives me a good chance to express myself in writing and write what I like

  5. I think what were doing in the class is great because we get a chance to see how people express themselves . We also get to learn many life experiences that people go through in life . I think this is very beneficial towards us kids .

  7. At first the article took a while for me to warm up too, but when I did I found it quite interesting. It was really cool to know that kids we're getting a chance to bring there own opinion to the table. Graduation is a huge part of a persons life. Who are you without college, or some sort of education? Nothing in today's society. So it saddens me to hear that many Americans aren't finishing high school.

  10. I believe that the article at first was not that interesting but after reading it , it actually was very engaging when it stated " But our current educational approach doesn’t just fail to prepare teenagers for graduation or for college academics; it fails to prepare them, in a profound way, for adult life." - i found this quote very true because high school is not only suppose to prepare you for college but to prepare you for the rest of your life and for the world to come but the approach that they are taking is not as effective and is actually people are dropping out faster and faster everyday but reading this article it could change a lot of peoples minds about college and life in general . - Janaya Tyler

  11. Reading this article makes a lot of sence from what these kids are doing to their lifes. the children need to realize that what they do now will effect them in their future career. They need to do the right things now so they could get somewhere in life and graduating high school is a start to getting into college.I hope we could make the right desicion and become something in our lifes.

  12. I found the article to be very interesting,it caught my attention the minute i started reading it.I like how the students worked harder to graduate high school, it shows people that they actually cared. With graduating high school and working harder towards there goals, they have improved there chances of a better life. This article made me realize that i have to work harder to better my chances of becoming a successful person in life.Anyone should read this, especially students who fall into the category of dropping out of high school.

  13. I think it was great that the students had an opportunity to create their own education. Students who were once failing eventually started teaching the classes. I think students should have more of a say in how to run there education, and how they are teached.
